I REMEMBER REPORTING JANUARY 1961. I HAVE BEEN MANY TIMES BACK TO SAN DIEGO AND ALWAYS MAKE IT A POINT TO VISIT THE RTC GROUNDS. MY SON WAS STATIONED AT SD IN THE COAST GUARD. I CAN ONLY TELL YOU THAT IT HAD A LASTING MEMORY THE RTC AND I AM GLAD THE USS NEVER SAIL (LOL) IS STANDING TALL AND IN NEED OF PAINT BUT STILL A SYMBOL OF CAMP, ODLY ENOUGH, I ONLY MET ONE OTHER GRADUATE DURING MY SERVICE TO OUR GREAT NATION.

Mr. Coffman, I wish I could see the differences between Boot camp in your day and 20 years later. I bet it had changed a lot more than from '72, when I was there, to '92, when the Navy was getting ready to close San Diego and consolidate all basic training at Great Lakes! :)

I did get stationed with one guy from my bootcamp company on our first two duty stations after boot. We ended up at ACB-1 in Coronado for our first year, then another two years aboard LST-1166.

"Hawkeye" credited me with getting him through bootcamp, as he wasn't that sharp when it came to book learnin'. He had asked if he could copy a few answers during one of the harder written tests, and I told him to try and sit one row to the right of me, and one seat behind for a good view, and don't get caught! He didn't, and he graduated. We were separated for our last duty stations, with me ending up with a six month early out due to cutbacks, and I lost track of him ever since.

I left RTC on May 9, '72, and after the 2 weeks of boot leave, I reported to NAS Memphis, where many of the 'A' schools for aviation technical ratings were located. I ran into a dozen or so  guys from my company (086) in the first week, but didn't really keep in touch for very long. Two guys from the company wound up in a sister aviation squadron, where we ran into each other every so often, but again, we weren't close friends. Since the advent of the internet, I've posted occasionally on sites like this, but never have made contact with anyone from my boot camp company.

it's kind of funny the last ship I was on was the Coral Sea, on board for 11 months          August 13th 1962 my discharge  date as I was sitting in the launch to go ashore I ran into 2 others that I'd gone through boot camp with. 11 months and I'd never seen either one. our company was either 301 or 501 it's been too long

Update: Just returned from driving from Louisiana to San Diego. I had easy access to the old NTC and USS Neversail. The old footbridge has been replaced with a wide new one. If you walk out on the bridge you have a great view of the airport and both sides of what left of NTC. MCRD also pulled out.

Same here Bob. In contact with a one or two guys from other duty stations. But none from boot camp.

It has been just over 50 years since I left boot camp, and in all those years I have yet to make contact with anyone from my company, 66-745. I've been to plenty of reunions over the years and have met many I served with from various other commands, but still waiting for that elusive NTC shipmate to show up. I did find one boot member over on the TogetherWeServed site, but he didn't reply to my inquiry.
