I was a BT on the USS Worden DLG 18 in Feb. 1973. During that month we served as the flagship for Radm. McCauley. I remember the North Vietnamese officials came aboard to negotiate the mine clearing ops.

I was in V-1 Div, FLT DK LPO Onboard the USS New Orleans LPH 11. and was sent TAD to USS Ogden LPD 5 when their Air Dept refused to go to work. Myself and 4 Men from the Orleans went over to help the Ogden during Flight Ops.

I enjoyed my time on the New Orleans.  It was well-run and organized and ship's company was always friendly and helpful.  And the food was MUCH better than later on the Tripoli.

RADM Brian McCauley was Commander, Task Force 78. Embarked on USS New Orleans and, later, USS Tripoli, the task force cleared mines (laid by aircraft from the USS Coral Sea in November and December 1972) in Haiphong Harbor, Vinh coastal area and inland waterways. I was part of TF 78 staff with COMOMCOM under Capt. Felix Vecchione. Anybody remember the old Mofo??? (ha)
