Entered Camp Moffat October 1st 1969. Instantly convinced myself that I had made the worst mistake of my young life by joining the Navy. Later went on to serve with some really great people on board the USS Dahlgren DLG-12 and the USS Richmond K Turner DLG/CG-20

I remember arriving Moffet Field in late January 71. It was dark and my first thought getting off the bus (& being screamed at) was "damn I screwed up"!
We stayed in the old WWII barracks the first couple of nights. I remember that freezing cold wind blowing in through broken window panes!
I seemed blessing to move to the new barracks through that tunnel!
I see photos now off beautiful tree lined brick buildings at both camp. When I was there, Moffet barracks were old wooden things, almost barns!
The main barracks at Porter were plan concrete buildings three stories high. No warm looking brick buildings.
They were square with a courtyard in the center for freezing, oops I mean drying, clothes. There were also "hot rooms" somewhere inside, but I think we were only allowed to use them as a earned privilege.
Remember washing clothes in the concrete troughs? And ironing clothes with you soap box?

I've been writing about my Navy experiences, especially Boot camp in Camp Moffet July 1948.  You can read them here:  http://forum.woodenboat.com/showthread.php?61697-J-Dillon-11-years-...

Just scroll down a bit to where the boot camp stories start.

Mixed in the previous yarns are other sea stories as well as Navy yarns some aboard the USS Coral Sea CVB 43
