USS Independence in 1/45 scale

Could I get some help, please? I am in the process of building a replica of USS Independence in 1/45 scale and for the life of me, the web is no help. All I get is conflicting info.

Now, you would think that for someone who depployed in her twice, I should have every aspect of that ship ingrained in my brain.

What I need is Indy's ddimensions and some good quality photos for the detail work.

If anyone can help with this, I would be most appreciative.

  • From the 1977 Cruise Book

    Overall Length  1052 feet.

Height keel to mast top = to a 25 story building about 250'

    Extreme beam 251 feet

    Try the following website:  www.navsource.org

  • Don, if you go to google and type in the name and hull number, then click images and you will get tons of pictures, then click on photo to increase size. the reason i say hull number otherwise you will get other ships also.

    good luck Ron Brabbin

  • Well, David, I served on Independnece, not intrepid. And yes, I have seen flight ops in action (being a squadron Ordie, I saw more than a few "unannounced swim calls"). The big thing is that the flyers that want to attempt this all are aware of the risk involved. They will be ashore and attempting this. (Before you say it, I know that is next to impossible. They came up with it, not me. I just mentioned that I was building a large scale aircraft carrier. They took it from there.)

They came up with the idea of a flight deck mock up to practice on BEFORE trying to land on the boat in water. I have checked with my local authorities and as long as it is a model, no one aboard, and we do our fool hardy stunt during a time when boating is light or in an area with no traffic, they have no problem.

Next, the pilots of these birds would have to sign a waiver (to protect me more than anything else) before even thinking about trying the mock up landings.

I know you are not trying to deep six my idea and to be honest, I probably wouldn't listen anyway. IF this works, I'll provide some video of the flight ops and the outcomes.

  • Thanks David. I have scaled back on the size.

I like the suggestion of electrics for the powerplants and the four screws.

This is my first "major" modelling project. The reason for the huge size is that there are several model flying clubs in my area that thought it would be neat to take off and land on the ship.

That, however presents another set of problems.

I will be posting updates as they become available on this project, so stay tuned.

  • I have been working on a model of the Harry S. Truman in 1/96 scale and she is about 11 1/2 feet long by 34-36 inches in beam. The model weighs in at 245 pounds when in the water and she is Radio Controlled.

  • You are right when you say my math is off.... not just a little, but alot! Now my problem is to get the scale right so that I can make this thing as accurate as possible. And, yes, my wife is seriously thinking of having me sleep on the thing. As she puts it, "You spend more time with that damned boat than with me or the dog!" But, she says it with a smile on her face. She is actually anxious to see it completed herself. Any suggestions on propulsion?

  • This link may be of some help as well.

    • Thanks Duane.

The link however, gives a "operation too Complex" error message when I try to open it.

  • Wow that will be one huge model in 1/45 scale.

    She is:
    LOA: 1046 feet 6 inches
    Beam: 129 feet 1 inch
    Draft: 37 feet
    Displ: 56,000 Tons

I hope that this helps some

    • Yep, that helps. Now all I need is the time and patience. And, yes, it will be HUGE. My estimates are about 24' long and about 6' across her angle.
