I attended a conference with the Secretary before Thanksgiving - I am a Navy Veteran and have been active in helping homeless veterans in Central Alabama. We do not hold a monopoly on these men and women - they are in every one of our communities. The VA has a plan to help solve this problem - but as in everything with the VA - there is miles of red tape to get through - and we are tackling it one roll of tape at a time.Let me tell you my own story - I attended the Presidential Inauguration in 2009 - and found myself looking at nearly 20 homeless veterans near the White House. I called the VA the next day to see what was being done - they said various non profits have to help them. I asked where the biggest need was - they identified Birmingham - I found a few Navy vets to help me - we formed a non profit and began getting organized here in Alabama. Check out our web site www.cotsforvets.org to see what we are up to.I encourage each one of us on this page to find an organization in your own town that is working with homeless vets - and offer to help them. I guarantee you they need it - whether it be with a few bucks - a few hours of your time - whatever you can give. We as vets have to help our brothers and sisters on the streets. Thanks JD

  • Jerome, I think this is a great thing you are doing. It would be great if you could get an orginization started here in Florida as there are a number of homeless vets in Panama City. I went to the link you provided, but couldn't get the registration form to load. I am the Vice-President of the NW Florida VRA chapter located in the panhandle. We are a group of motorcyclist and are always willing to ride for a good cause. If you can give me the details on the cost of registration and sponsership I will bring this up at my next chapter meeting and post it on our forum. Any information you can give so I can share it with my chapter will be great.
