Rank Question

Hope you fine Vets can help me out here.  My wife served in the Navy as a Corpsman who served at Oakland Naval Hospital and with the Marines at MCAS El Toro.  She died recently and I want to put a plaque on her urn honoring her military service.  She was a HM3 PO3 from her DD214.  How would I display her name on the plaque?

Jane Doe (HM3 POS, USN)

Does that look right or is there another way?

Thank you in advance for your help!

  • Yeah, what he said.

  • a more formal address, if space permits:

Petty Officer Third Class xxxx xxx  USN

    or

Hospital Corpsman Third Class xxxx xxx USN

I would use the Hospital Corpsman title if she was particularly proud of her rating.  Most are, but HMs who worked with the USMC seem to be particularly proud of their work

  • HM3 PO3, USN would be OK. Or: HM3, E-4, USN.    E-4 is the rank or pay grade, HM is the specialty (hospitalman).
