Politics and Veterans, it's all about Respect

I've been alerted to some heavy conversations happening here on Navy Vets. It's clear that we have some incredible patriots who love this country and want the best. I'm not too concerned - I DO want the world to see how great Veterans can discuss their view of the world, our military, and politics. That said, the only thing that I ask is that we respect the fact that we WILL disagree with one another. As much as you think that your political views are 'correct', they are simply correct based on how you were raised, the environment you lived in, and the experiences in your life that brought you to your current beliefs. I'm not going to kick anyone out of Navy Vets when the discussions heat up and some conversations follow, even if when it goes awry and folks get their feelings hurt. I'm also not going to standby and watch folks get beat up on. In all honesty, it's fairly clear that this is a pretty conservative crowd here in Navy Vets. I don't want folks to start believing this network has a political stance - so I want both sides of the spectrum to enjoy their time here and celebrate the service they gave back to their country. Plenty of Democrats and Republican Veterans have given their lives so that we can have free speech today. I want free speech here - but I want us to take a step back from the keyboard and remember there's a shipmate on the other side of these conversations. A shipmate that paid the same price we did and deserves a voice and opinion just as we do. Let's show folks why we're the greatest fighting force in the world. We can disagree with each other, we don't even have to like one another, but we'll stand arm in arm and fight with one another when needed. You folks are my brothers and sisters and I'm thankful for each and every one of you.

  • Thankyou Brother Doug, enough said, I want to be the first to apologize for my out burst on the subject, it was a subject near and dear to the hearts of my forefathers, and put a burr under my saddle blanket. I won't give any names, because you know who you are, I'm sorry for any heated outburst that may have offended you,but my love of my Country comes first..... and I apologize to all my Brothers and Sisters here on NavyVets.com.....
    Thankyou, D.John Maddalena
    • No worries D. John!

I don't want to have one of those communities where folks feel like they need to watch what they say or they'll get the boot. I think much of our problems nowadays are because no one believes in taking the gloves off anymore and duking it out. Everyone deserves to be heard and the debates should continue - even if folks feel insulted.

I just want to make sure we all keep a basic line of respect that we're all here because we served. We all deserve to have our own opinions and have them heard. I look forward to the day that we have the numbers in Navy Vets when the 'powers that be' start paying attention to what folks are saying here.

      Thanks!
