WASHINGTON —  A Navy captain was demoted because she berated and assaulted her crew, not because she ledher guided missile cruiser on a drag-race with another U.S. warship inthe Pacific, an investigation shows.

Capt. Holly Graf was relieved of her command of the cruiser USS Cowpens after an investigation substantiated crew allegations thatshe was abusive and used her position for personal gain, naval officialssaid Thursday on condition of anonymity because they were notauthorized to speak on the record.

  • I think she had what was coming to her. But I am disappointed. This is what - 2010 - and there are STILL abusive CO's out there? I won't name names, but USS Charleston (LKA-113) back in 1987 received a HORRIBLE CO who was abusive, especially to the Radiomen on board, and thanks to the Walker spy trial for making life so miserable for us Radiomen. Anyway, the CO didn't trust any of us at all; there was no pride serving on that ship until the day he left, but we also had a very abusive Operations Officer around the same time who ended up getting let go due to his sharp attitude toward the crew AND to the new CO who wouldn't stand up for his abusive nonsense.

2010 and the Navy still has abusive officers - ridiculous. My best advice to any crewmember who has an abusive officer onboard - take it up your chain of command but if it is your CO - report it to the squadron, and if nothing is done, report it to your Congressman.
  • She is still a Captain, so she hasn't been demoted. She was relieved of command.
