My time in Yokosuka

I was stationed in Yokouska on 2 ships during one tour. I went to the Cochrane first and rode the WESTPAC Delight. We hit some mighty good liberty spots, but we all loved to hear

"PORT". We put her to bed in August 1990. I and a few shipmates walked across the pier to the Blue Ridge. "Building 19" we were told. Was pulled off leave and took her out on probabily her longest time away from Yokosuka. Yup we headed up the Naval Forces Central Command, for Desert Storm/Shield. Stayed from September till May. After some time in SRA we went on the Show the Flag Cruises. Bali was very nice indeed. Hit Australia a few times if you haven't been you are missing some very good liberty. There is always someone to invite you to the Servicemans(womans) Club. We even went snorkling on the Great Barrier Reef. That was to much for words!!!!! But it was always great to hear that one word "PORT"  Lib's in Japan was great. Who can forget the Tokoyo Runs? I lived part of the time off base. My two sons (Now Adults) learned Japanese. Our house looked over the Bay.Being a Cook I always missed the rush hour traffic. I always look back on the good times we had in Yokokuska. If you see any scrach marks on the runway at Narita. They are mine, I didn't want to go.Thanks Jim

  • Hi Jim, I know what you mean. My almost 9 years in Japan were some of the best times I had while in the Navy and a big reason why I decided to make the Navy a career. We lived on and off base while we were there and experienced everything we could in the time we had. Lived in Nobi and Miurakaigan during our stay. Great people and a great place. We didn't want to leave either.
