USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) was a destroyer tender, the first of her class, and designed to be a floating repair shop for ships of the U.S. Navy either in port or at sea. It was named for Samuel Gompers, a distinguished American labor leader during the late nineteenth century.

  • I was aboard the gomper from 1969 to 1972. myname is tom larson. I worked in the typewriter shop then in the watch repair shop for the last 2 years

     

  • Just joined this group,...I served on the Gompers only for a short time in 86, reported aboard in March and went to R-4 div, and was made LCPO...deployed to go to the mid eas , and made ETCS in Sept...t but when we crossed the line near Diego Garcia, (on the 3-4th of Oct, I was medevac'd off do to a sever Asthma attack...left a lot of good sailors that day...was sent back to Oaknoll Naval Hospital, Oakland, and was medically retired in April of 87.

  • Served on Sammy G from Nov 1970 - Sep 1972.  Served in the W-2 division.  Deployed on the FATSAM cruise (1971-1972).

  • Served on the Sammy G May 83 - March 85 in R2, 31A. Was on the SAT/BAF team most of the time I was onboard just to get out of the quarterdeck watch.

  • Freshly out of the Gulf in 1988, we had the pleasure of mooring with her. First females we've seen in a while...much fun! She had aerobics instructors, real boxing ring and movie night accompany by members of the other sex was what the Dr. Ordered ;)))

Memories

I am a "plank owner" member of the commissioning crew for the Gompers with Capt. Risch. I served on her from July 1967 until the spring of 1970, when I was transferred to USS Southerland DD-743, the first ship into Tokyo Bay after the Japanese surrender at the end of WW2. I was in the Interior Communications shop, R-3 Division as a gyrocompass technician.
