  • my twin brother and i were waiting in pearl for 2 weeks for the MO to arrive----as we were walking on the dock to serve on our first ship, all we noticed was a huge gash on her side....we were both gmgs---so we also became helmsmen!

  • I was on the USS Monticello from June , 1969 to March, 1971.  In that time we were deployed to Viet Nam on Two occasions and for a period of three months we were in Bremerton, WA overhauling the ship to get it ready for a WestPac cruise.  We transported Marines to Viet Nam in 1970.

During that time I was at the helm one day when we were coming along side a tanker to be refueled at sea.  In an instance we were hit by the tanker and had a gash ripping out a section of the Monticello.  After the investigation was conducted, we found out that the approach line was to close to the tanker.  We didn't figure on the backwash of the propellers.  So we were sucked into it's wash and hit the tanker.  That was the "best" day of my life.
