I was aboard Kitty Hawk for 1967-68 Westpac cruise. I worked in the S&R section of IOIC.
How can I find out the exact time and date the Kitty Hawk crossed the international dateline for the first time. I believe it was around the 5th or 6th of October 1962.
The Inaugural entrance into the Golden Order of the Dragon for the ship and many of the crew.
Joined the crew in Bremerton, WA. dry dock after swaping duty with a fellow sailor. I was On the Connie in dry dock prior to the swap. I grew up in the Seattle area so staying in dry dock was a no brainer. This was some time around June of 1976. I was a Raidoman and I remember when we did leave to San Diego our berthing area was right under the flight deck and the catapults were right next to my bunk. Not much sleep during flight opps..
Went aboard at Subic Bay.
Ships company, equipment repair shop in the fantail. That was an awesome place to work.
Joined the Navy in '61. Went aboard the Hawk in April '62.
Started out in Navigation Dept. and graduated up to 2nd Div.
Best move. Made two cruises to Hawaii and two to West Pac.
Had some great times and memories of those days.
Still remember being first ship on duty at Yankee Station.
Charter member of Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.
Got out when She left Puget Sound after overhaul.
I did one cruise on the Kitty Hawk '84-'85. She wasn't the worst boat I had been on, but she wasn't the best either. We did get to some new places that I had not been before like Columbo, Sri Lanka & Mombasa Kenya. I was working as the Paraloft Supervisor and CDI. I was TAD from VA-165 out of Whidbey Island, WA. Like I said not a bad boat, but she had some issues, but didn't they all!
I reported aboard the Hawk in June 1975 as a CWO. I was attached to the TSC (Tactical Support Center) next to CIC. After the cruise we went to Puget Sound in March 1976 for our overhaul. I was the Operations Dept overhaul manager and had an excellent crew to support me. I departed the Hawk on 1 April 1977, the day she came out of the yard.
