Read more…My tour of duty on the Coral Sea began in Nov. 1986 and ended in Nov.1988. I was originally assigned to the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department as the Leading Chief. I enjoyed the job, worked with some great Officers, Chiefs and Sailors. The boss was a Cdr Mason. Made Master Chief in May of 1989 and made the error of complaining to the XO, Capt Denny Mc Ginn about the HT's not fixing a leaking urinal drain. He asked me if I knew how to solve the problem. Read more…Hi, I was abord Coral Sea from Feb. 1951 through Apr. 1954. I'm not sure of exact dates, I'm not sure of anything at my advanced age. I think I enjoyed my time aboard the Coral Maru. I made some great friends, most of whom were in the V3G (Av. gas gang) division. I've had the good fortune to remain in contact with a few of my shipmates but, would sure like to hear from any others.

Reported onboard the Coral Sea in October 1975 at Long Beach, California while she was on dry-dock. After that we went to Alameda, California. I was assigned to AIMD hydraulic shop and went on my first WestPac with this great ship, did not think so at the time but I was young and did not know any better. Went on my first deployment and discovered a new world , had a blast and really enjoyed my first time away from the states.

Scrapping the Coral Sea was the costliest venture the US Navy had ever undertaken to scrap a Navy vessel up to that time and if I'm not mistaken, it took seven years to cut her up. There are four or five carriers currently being scrapped in Texas. The Forrestal, Ranger and two or three others. The big "E" is in Newport News and the last I heard a decision was to be made as to where remainder of the work is to be done before she's scrapped.
I served aboard Coral Sea CV-43 from Dec 75 to Sept 76. She was in Long Beach Naval Shipyard for six months, then went back to Naval Air Station Alameda in May 76. I was an EM1 in "E" Div. and worked in the Distribution Gang for EMC Cooper.
Was aboard from 1968/1972 I was in M Div. # 2 Engine room I remember you Lawrence Gorski I think you where MM2. Back then.

Was on the 79-80 cruise with HC-1 Det3, transfered before the World cruise, shame they couldn't keep her as a museum like her sister the Midway.
The Coral Sea was my only duty station, served on ships crew in the Air Department in V-3 division, made 3.25 tours on Yankee Station during my time on board from 1968 to 1972
Served in OE Div. as an ET from Dec. 77 to May 1980.
You got it brother. Live well and be safe, my friend.
That's what I love about this site...it brings people together! Captain Ferris is featured in the book!
