USS Yorktown (CV/CVA/CVS-10) is one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during World War II for the United States Navy. She is named after the Battle of Yorktown of the American Revolutionary War, and is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Initially to have been named Bon Homme Richard, she was renamed Yorktown while under construction to commemorate USS Yorktown (CV-5), lost at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. Yorktown was commissioned in April 1943, and participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations, earning 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.

If you look closley in the middle of the photo you can barely see a grey beard sticking out. That's me It's right behind a bald headed fellow. There's a former ph3 whom is a friend of mine living in Mount Morris Mi. He was aboard during the Korean War. After his Navy tour he joined the Marine Corps. Do you want me to see if he's interested in getting in touch with you? Where is your current home?

  • Ah yes: My first ship after Basic Training. Caught up with her around 1 December,1961. She was in Yokosuka. I'd never seen such a huge ship as her before Was assigned to "B" Division # 4 fireroom. Also worked in the boiler repair gang until transfered to class "A" BT School. I recall during the Nuclear tests in 62 or 63 when the shock wave hit the ship,we snipes down in the hole didn't know  if she'd rupture a steam line, but knew if she did,we'd be dead in about 2 seconds. You know she is the lead ship at Patriot's Point in Mount Pleasant,South Carolina. We have annual reunion the first full weekend of October. I usually sign up for the meet & greet that takes place on Saturday from 1000-1400.. Since I'm still able i sometimes go for her birthday which is 15 April. I live about 4 1/2 hours away. Al Larivee BT/3 U.S.N. 1961-65.
