Vets who either satisfactorily complete initial Gunner's Mate "A" school training, or who "striked" for the rating as a deck seaman by showing competence in the field of ordnance.

    i tried going to a school in great lakes but my co said i was too valuable to be able to go so i was stuck on my mighty butte really pissed off that i couldnt go

    Hello mates, I became a GMG3 in 1961 and GMG2 in 1963 on my first enlistment. I retired as a GMCS in 1980. Glad to be here.

    I just joined Navy Veterans and am looking at the different commands.
    I went to boot camp at Great Lakes, company 1966-178, I attended GM 'A' school at the green building. Went on to school at Albuquerque, NM. To become a GMT. Spend a total of 15 years (4 yr active duty and 11 more years in the reserve, mating Chief in 1977.
    Received a direct commission as an Ensign in the Navy Supply corps in 1981. Retired in 2003 as O5. Having been a Mustang, made all these years a very memorable career with the start in the Black shoe Navy.

    Retired in 96 as a GMCS (SW).  Spent 14 years on the Mk 16 (ASROC) then 18 months as a Major Caliber Gunner aboard the USS Iowa BB-61.  Ended my career working on the Mk 13 GMLS.

    Hi Keith, My name Bob Kreyer. I served in the US Navy from June 1965 to Feb 1969. I was a GMG-2 on Swiftboats in Vietnam. We took care of .50 cal machine guns, M-60 machine guns, 81 mm mortars, small arms, LAW rockets, M-79 grenade launchers, grenades, you name it.

    Hey Kieth. So, what happened to the 3" 50's on Mt 31? Looked like they replaced them with something else in the pictures you had.
