Vets who either satisfactorily complete initial Gunner's Mate "A" school training, or who "striked" for the rating as a deck seaman by showing competence in the field of ordnance.

i tried going to a school in great lakes but my co said i was too valuable to be able to go so i was stuck on my mighty butte really pissed off that i couldnt go
I went to boot camp at Great Lakes, company 1966-178, I attended GM 'A' school at the green building. Went on to school at Albuquerque, NM. To become a GMT. Spend a total of 15 years (4 yr active duty and 11 more years in the reserve, mating Chief in 1977.
Received a direct commission as an Ensign in the Navy Supply corps in 1981. Retired in 2003 as O5. Having been a Mustang, made all these years a very memorable career with the start in the Black shoe Navy.
Retired in 96 as a GMCS (SW). Spent 14 years on the Mk 16 (ASROC) then 18 months as a Major Caliber Gunner aboard the USS Iowa BB-61. Ended my career working on the Mk 13 GMLS.
