I was also there in 1972, but a little earlier, Company 086. And most of
my company took the advice of authority about our
first liberty and went to the Balboa Park zoo, LoL. I think most of
us took the opportunity to also wander around downtown in our dress blues and
try to look salty.
By the looks of things, I'm the youngest guy here. I went through boot camp in January, 1986. Company 005. I think it was only about 6 or 8 weeks, but I don't really remember. Our first company commaner was a first class named Calabrese. He didn't last too long. He got replaced in the first couple weeks by BTC Fisher. After boot, I walked down the road to NTC and went to "A" school. I don't remember anyone calling it Worm Island. I mostly remember the planes coming into San Diego airport at tree top level over the base.
I went through RTC-San Diego from December 1970 to April 1971.
I believe boot camp was about 12 weeks at the time, but I arrived in mid December just before the holiday break, then volunteered for Drum & Bugle, so I ended up being there nearly fifteen weeks.
EN1 Conteras was our company commander in 467 while QMC McLamb was CC for D&B.
