  • I finished my tour on the USS Holland AS-32 when she was in dry dock in 1974- 1975. I was Honorably Discharged June 23,1975 and went to work at PSNS the very next day. Had all my papers in and had been interviewed before I had even been discharged. Even had my Shipyard ID already taken so the next day I could go to work. Worked in the Metalurgy  Lab and the Foundry. Sorry that it closed in 1994. Happy that they made a historical site in 2017 and they are preserving it this year.

  • I also had a "tour" of the Long Beach in dry dock in 1976. It is interesting that it is the only place where one can not only walk all around a ship, under the keel and over the deck but also all the way around from bow, to port side, aft to starboard. It was kind of weird. I agree it is kind of creepy standing, well squatting under the keel of a heavy cruiser knowing the only thing keeping me from becoming a smear on the dry dock bottom is some wood blocks.

After "touring" Long Beach I kind of wanted to go under the Kitty Hawk which was also in the docks but didn't get the chance.

  • We were in drydock on the Long Beach CGN-9. The thing that I'll never forget is being taken to the bottom of the dock and looking up at the bottom of the ship. That was one of the few times I ever really got nervous anyplace.

  • I was part of the SurgeMain team from NOSC Akron that supported the Shipyard.
  • The picture is of the Delta Pier at Sub Base Bangor, WA...I was stationed at TTF from 85 to 87 and at Bremerton on board the USS Carl Vinson 91/92.
