  • Met my second ship in Portland, going through an overhaul at Swan Island and Willamette Iron & Steel. The moved around a bunch and came back at the ripe old age of 57. I'm here to stay. Was a Machinist's Mate and a Navy Diver and did 20 years of service (1975-1995).

  • Enlisted before I got out of High School in 1971, went to boot in July '71.  Got out of the Navy in June, 1975.  Was born and raised in Oregon, but now live in Wasilla, Alaska.

  • Enlisted from Forest Grove, OR on delayed entry for about 10 months then went up to Portland, OR. for the final processing and then off to San Diego for boot.

  • Born in Roseburg and grew up in Florence.  I initially enlisted in the Air Force in 1972 and was honorably discharged in 1975.  Joined the Oregon Army National Guard in Eugene.  Enlisted in the Navy in 1979 in San Diego and attended Boot in San Diego.  Was in the first class to receive basic seamanship training on board an active Navel Vessel (USS Paul Revere).  Was a cut back in 1992 as a First Class DP.
  • I wonder how many folks from Oregon ended up doing time with VP-46. Weird.
  • Born and raised in Eugene, Graduated from Churchill.  Joined the NAVY in August of 71 at the Portland meps station.  got sent to San Diego for Boot Camp Company 268 (the whole company was from Oregon).  did tours in San Diego and Adak Alaska, also was stationed on USS Tripoli (LPH-10), USS Constellation (CV-64) and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72).  Retired as a Chief Aviation Storekeeper 31 Jan 93.
  •    I too was born and raised in Corvallis, but our family moved away before I could graduate from Corvallis High. (And we lived right across the street from the school.)

I joined the Navy using the Portland recruiting office because the Salem office had met their quota already. (My draft lottery number was "4".)

I went to boot camp at San Diego in December 1970. Had three folks from Oregon in my company, 467, and three more in our sister company, 466.

       My first squadron was VP-4.

I was with VP-46 when we made the first west coast deployment to an east coast site in 1980 –– Keflivik, Iceland.

I ended up staying in the Navy for twenty years. (Not something I planned on originally.)

After all the travel and adventures, it feels a bit strange to be back in Oregon where most folks have no idea what a P-3 Orion is and you have to explain that the pointy end of a ship is the bow.

I've been out long enough now to miss many aspects of Navy life.

But mostly I miss being able to fit into my Cracker Jacks.

  • stragglers now thats funny
  • Enlisted in Salem, Oregon in 1979. Went to Boot Camp with a bunch of other Oregon folks and formed All State Oregon Company 116. We had a few stragglers from Vancouver, Washington but that's alright.
  • Enlisted in Portland in 1971, lived in Springdale
