On 1 October 1977, Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia, was established as the senior US Navy command on the island. At the time the NAVCOMMSTA was the primary tenant, but as the new major facilities were completed, most notably the expanded anchorage and mooring area and the extended airfield, other tenants were commissioned. From 1981 to 1987 it was Naval Air Facility, Diego Garcia.

Stationed here from Apr 77 - Apr 78. Went there on the Proteus for 3 months in 1984. Also 5 trips to Diego between 2008 and 2016 while working for Dyn Corp as a contractor doing comms for Compsron 2
I was there the entire year of 1975.
Was there from Oct. 73 till July 74 with MCB-4. I've seen pictures of what it looks like today and all I can say is WOW. We didn't have sail boats for our off time or women. But we did get 7 days of R & R in Thailand but you had to be on the Island for at least 3 months before we could take it.
