  • I'm from Harpursville about 20 miles North of Binghamton, New York. My father served on a destroyer during WW II and I was in from 70 to 74. My son served 8 years about 13 years ago with the Navy.

It's nice to see a site for New Yorkers!

  • I grew up in Remsen city and Saranac Lake, NY.  Good to find this group even though I have now lived longer out of the state than I did in it.

  • I should add that just before our ship returned to the states from Guam a friend of mine and I returned to Great Lakes for OM "C" School.

So the only movement we missed with our ship was the cruise from Guam to Bremerton, Washington.

Regretfully after we became Golden Shellbacks, we never had the opportunity to bring any new pollywogs into our fellowship of Shellbacks.

  • I went to Boot Camp at Great lakes November 17, 1970 and stayed in Great Lakes for my OM "A" School for Optical Men. From Great Lakes to the USS Hunley, AS31 in Charleston, South Carolina. The Scuttle Butt in Great Lakes was the Hunley was either going to Rota, Spain or Holley Locks, Scotand to relieve a tender there for 18 months. When we got on board we found out that we were going to be relieving a tender in Guam for 18 months.

It was still a great cruise and we had a great time getting to and staying on Guam. We went through the Panama Canal, saw Acapulco, Hawaii, and Australia on the way to Guam. We became Golden Shellbacks and got to dive in some of the clearest waters in the world.

From Guam we went to Bremerton, Washington for 11 months and I got to explore the great North West and the West Coast from Seattle to San Francisco.

I drove across country twice and saw the Yellowstone and the Bad Lands in early April when everything was just coming to life.

Our trip back to our home port of Charleston stopped at San Francisco, San Diego, Acapulco for 5 days, back through the Panama Canal, to Gitmo, to, Cocoa Beach, Fort Lauderdale for Easter Break, and back to Charleston.

I finished my 4 year tour of duty being released from active duty July 17, 1974 to begin college near my hometown in Binghamton, New York.
