  Served aboard the world's first guided missle cruiser (USS BOSTON CAG-1) 1961 - 1963. Great memories. This was the basic training for my civilian job when I got off active (Stationary Engineer), and retired as Chief Engineer of the Power House!

  I was on the USS Rogers from 1968-72. Worked in the Aft. Fireroom for 3 years, then Oil King for the last year. We used a not the good stuff for the Boiler....BLACK OIL! Dungarees have black oil on them. Snipes (Boilerroom) ruled. I agree we we always the first on and the last off. I can still smell the refueling smell from taking on fuel.

  it,s been 50 years since I  was in the navy..so many good memories..on uss saint paul CA 73.1963-66.came out a BT-2..never had a school...wish I had..

  Boot at RTC Great Lakes, BT 'A' school (5 weeks) 6YO advanced training at Snipes Castle. Reported to USS Vulcan AR-5 as BT3 at a munitions base across from NYC. 2 years on Vulcan, IO cruise, 3 months in GITMO. Worked aft space, Oil Lab, and Forward space. Detached to go to C school, got knocked off my bike by a 17 air-date. 2 years at NLSO Norfolk on limited duty. Put on TDRL as BT2. Vulcan was a different ship. 400 pound B&W boilers. Only thing automatic control was on the SSTG's to control the condensate level. We never used it. Was a great laugh when you get an OPE officer asking you 'What is it?'

  Jim Blanton, check out the Historic Naval Ships Assoc at www.hnsa.org.  They list all the museum ships.  The ORLECK is in Lake Charles, LA and the KENNEDY is in Battleship Cove, MA.  But there are also a few SUMNER and FLETCHER class around (Buffalo, Charleston SC, Boston).  The plants on all three classes are identical as far as I know.

  rodger joye thank you for the info I will try to find out witch ship is closet to me in ky and try to take my son and grand kid to see it  my son will see that it was not like the video games he plays schools need to teach more on hist. and less on bs.
