The base covers over 7,000 acres on the shores of Hood Canal, in Puget Sound, and was activated as a sub base in 1977, after being established as a munitions depot in World War Two.

  • First arrived in Dec 1979, to off-load and Decommission USS Abraham Lincoln SSBN-602 as a NavDac Tech. I went thru Navaids Conversion and then proceeded  to the USS Michigan PreCom unit in Groton, Ct. I returned in 1982 as Leading Navaids Tech on USS Michigan SSBN 727G for 5 patrols. Transfered ashore to TRF- Nav Shop as Leading NavAids Tech for 5 years. Then went back to sea on USS Ohio SSBN 726B for 1 patrol before getting out at beginning of Desert Shield.

  • Stationed at the service piers on the tug boat USS Ottumwa YTB-761 around 1986-1988. Acted as ship's electrician & qualified as Chief Engineer.

  • My First Duty Station. I arrived New Years Day 1982. I would say the best duty station in my whole enlistment. Great location.

  • Best duty station in my career.  XO of SUBASE Bangor from 2003 - 2004 and then NAVBASE Kitsap from 2004 - 2006 following consolidation of SUBASE Bangor and NAVSTA Bremerton.  Great Navy Family in PACNORWEST!

  • Mark Ogden Served From Feb 1976 to march 1978....Met and married his first wife, had 2 Daughters and started his life here before being shipped to USS Berkley in San Diego

  • Awesome duty station.  Assigned as the Administrative Officer at SUBASE Bangor from February 1983 to February 1986.  I have nothing but the fondest of memories. Super people, beautiful base!!
