Crash Crew

I was there from June 71 to june of 72. My duty was the Crash Crew. Williwa, Mucklucks, Gut poker, alot of tundra and a woman behind every tree. Could'nt wait to leave but always wanted to return for one quick stay for old times. Wow what a place for a duty station. But made the best of it and had alot of good times there.

  • Which tree did you use?  Should have been a weed by the 1970  ( I sware those trees grew BACKWARDS while I was there.  Never seen the wind change directions in such a short period of time (not unusual to change runways a time or two before we could take off!  Hada good time hopping from Amchita, Cold Bay, Kodiac and all the other island  (even a couple with dirt runways)  Flew a lot of med evacs off those islands.  Had some REALLY good trout fishing though!

  •    I may have landed at Adak with VP-4 abut the time your duty was wrapping up 1972, Greg.

We sure appreciated haveing the crash crews following us down the runway when we landed on three engines or had other emergencies. Thank you for looking out for us.

I just came across a glass from the Husky Lodge that I had stashed away. (Can't imagine how I came to have it.)

Being in Adak was like visiting the moon, except for the breathable atmosphere.

  • My Uncle, George Hamilton was the Fire Chief there for the Navy back in the 70's.  He has sinced passed.  He retired from the Navy there as a Lt. Com.
